James accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at age 5, but did not completely surrender his life to Him until he was 31. At that point, he realized the Lord had a plan for his voice and he vowed to sing, "only for Jesus" as long as the Lord allowed him the breath to sing. When he is not singing, James and his wife Angela live with their four sons, in Chesapeake, Virginia and attend South Norfolk Baptist Church where he is a Deacon, Bible teacher and Worship Leader. James works as Supervisor of Operations and Maintenance for Dominion Virginia Power where he has been for 20 years. He is also the grandson of Rev. Theodore A. Bashford, Executive Director of the Union Mission Ministries. In November, 2000 James spent ten days on a Mission trip singing at churches across the country of Romania. From Emmanuel Baptist Church, the largest Baptist church in Europe, to small Gypsy churches in third world communities, James ministered to and fell in love with these wonderful people. He went back to Romania in May, September and November of 2001 and began leading Evangelism teams there in 2002. To date, over 600 people have accepted Christ as their Savior as a result of the team's work. The Union Mission Ministries has charged James with the mission of leading "Project Romania". The project has sent many teams to Romania, helped build a Christian children's home and a church. They have developed a long and close relationship with Lugoj Baptist Church where they hold an annual Pastor's Conference, a bi-annual Ladies Conference, Bible schools, medical clinics, and send out street evangelism teams. Seeds have been planted for a continued presence in Romania as the Union Mission/Bashford Foundation recently put a deposit down on a 75-acre farm to be used as a beachhead from which to evangelize Eastern Europe. James has a simple Mission statement: “To present the Gospel to the unsaved world.” He says, “When there is pain, confusion, sickness, or death, I hope that God will speak and console through my music.” On the back cover of "Redeemer is Faithful and True" he says, “I encourage you to remember that God is never short on his promises. He is never late and will not forsake us.” To God be the Glory! |
