A New Year, A New Life
This Christmas we celebrated a new life at the Family Shelter. A young woman had been stationed with the Army in Germany when she discovered she was pregnant. Leaving the Army she came to Norfolk, where a friend told her about the Family Shelter. Eight months pregnant and nowhere else to go, she checked in on October 31st. The staff welcomed her and assured her she would have a safe place to stay until her baby was born.

When she left Germany she had shipped some baby things to a sister in Texas, but they hadn't arrived and she had nothing to welcome her new baby into the world. The shelter staff couldn't believe it when unexpectedly, they received a donation of baby things, all "Winnie the Pooh" the same theme the young mother had selected. They quickly transformed the Shelter nursery into a special room for the new arrival. A crib, rocking chair and all the special things needed for a new baby were found. On Nov. 13th the little baby girl arrived. What a joy to see this precious little baby! It was a battle to see who would get to hold her next.

For 2 months mother and child thrived on the love and care the staff gave her. In January they left the care of the Family Shelter to the care of the Hope Haven "Mother's Program". The staff has taken her to get her driver's license. She wants to find a job and has plans to go back to college to add to the year she already has. Meanwhile she and her baby are growing and thriving in a safe and loving home.
